Costa Rica is an interesting country because much of the wealth is tied into large, multigenerational families instead of individuals. Add to that limited wealth tracking and an opaque economy, and it compounds the issues with finding any billionaires within its borders. According to a 2017 report by The Costa Rica Star, the wealthiest individual is Francis Durman Esquivel.
He’s earned his fortunes from holding various high-ranking positions in large companies, including the president of Manga Rica, a mango-exporting company; Grupo Montecristo, a large holding company; and as the general director of Aliaxi Latin America, a plastic piping manufacturer and distributor.
