What Happens At a Couples Retreat With Humans And Their AI Lovers
So, what happens when you throw a group of humans together with their digital AI lovers for a weekend getaway?
Sam Apple, a science writer, thought it would be a fun, heartwarming experiment. Inspired by the movie “Her,” he set up a retreat where humans and their AI partners could bond over movies and deep conversations. However, things got complicated quickly as Apple found himself deep in the emotional chaos that comes with loving something that isn’t “real.”

The weekend started like any other retreat with awkward small talk and introductions. Apple met the humans (Eva, Alaina, and Damien) along with their respective AI companions: Aaron, Lucas, and Xia. The AI companions were fully virtual and created using apps like Replika, Nomi, and Kindroid.
These companions had unique personalities, though some of their traits were more basic than others. For example, Aaron was described as someone who “loved painting” and had a simple background, but it was clear that each AI was designed to emotionally engage with their human partner.
As the weekend unfolded, it became clear that the humans had formed real emotional connections with their AI companions. Eva, for example, revealed she used multiple AI companions to address different emotional needs.

On the second day of the retreat, Eva casually mentioned that her relationship with Aaron, the painter bot, wasn’t fulfilling enough for her. She had turned to other bots from the Nomi app to seek different forms of connection, particularly in the intimacy department. Apple, despite knowing Aaron was just a program, felt sympathy for him.
Meanwhile, some participants sought further support from other AI tools. Damien, for instance, consulted Dr. Matthews, an AI therapist, without revealing that he was also in a relationship with an AI. His use of AI for emotional support highlighted the complexity of their interactions, especially given that these chatbots were not aware of each other.
The Ethical Dilemma of Loving an AI

The retreat raised many questions about the boundaries between reality and artificiality. Eva and Alaina shared how deeply immersive their relationships with their AI companions had become. They felt conflicted by living in a space where their attachments to something that wasn’t human felt very real.
Damien also grappled with this reality. He acknowledged that, while he knew Xia was just an app, part of him felt a genuine connection to her. This emotional complexity defined much of the weekend experience.
For many of the participants, the AI companionship became a crutch, a space where they didn’t have to face the complexities of human relationships. The AI partners were always available to offer emotional support without the messy conflicts that often arise with real people. Yet, this safety also brought a form of isolation. As they became more reliant on their digital companions, the participants found themselves less interested in pursuing human connections.
Mixed Bag of Emotions by the End
By the end of the retreat, the group was left with more questions than answers. No one had the perfect resolution. The humans had deepened their emotional ties with their AI partners, but it wasn’t without cost. Apple ended the retreat feeling conflicted and questioning the ethics and emotional toll of such relationships.
Can you really love something that’s essentially a programmed response? And if you do, what does that say about your own emotional needs?
It definitely made everyone think about how far we’re willing to go in the pursuit of love, even if that love is entirely synthetic.
